Govt to Regulate Companies Like Netflix

JAKARTA: The government is preparing a regulation that will govern companies like Netflix or businesses which involve the broadcasting or delivery of audio and video material through the internet.
     The businesses, known as over-the-top (OTT) services, will be allowed to resume once the regulation is issued.
     "We are currently preparing a regulation that will be a win-win solution so that foreign OTT service providers can also contribute to growth," said Bambang Heru Tjahjono, a senior official at the Communications and Information Ministry recently.
     The ministerial regulation is expected to be completed in March this year. One Important stipulation is that foreign OTT providers open a permanent office in the country so that the providers can contribute to the national economy.
     Foreign OTT service providers are allowed to cooperate with some local companies.
     Netflix offered its services in the country in January. However, State telecommunications firm Telkom blocked the service, saying that the OTT provider needed to follow rules. - Antara
